Welcome to NASH kNOWledge!
We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that was established to increase public awareness of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), which is quickly becoming a public health crisis. Based in the Pittsburgh area, we partner with other organizations across the country that have similar goals and we also speak at events and conferences throughout the country.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney diseases estimates that 100 million Americans have NAFLD and that 20-25% of those have NASH. There are typically no symptoms associated with its onset, which is why it’s known as a silent epidemic and most people who have NAFLD and NASH don’t know it. As an unidentified person on the internet described it, “you’re not sick, then one day you are.” This was exactly my own experience.
The prevalence of NAFLD and NASH continues to rapidly grow with no end in sight. In fact, experts anticipate a 60+% increase in NASH by 2030. Principal risk factors include diabetes and obesity, both of which are also spiraling upwards in the number of cases. NAFLD and NASH are often not part of the obesity and diabetes story, and the general public is largely unaware of NAFLD and NASH. Media coverage of this problem has become more commonplace but it is still relatively unknow to most Americans. There have been a spate of recent articles on the subject in the national media, but the lack of knowledge of these conditions remains largely unknown.
The problem is real and getting worse…
We hope to gain access to that audience through partnerships with organizations that have access to the public. This would include healthcare organizations, civic organizations and other organizations interested in public health. We are learning that this is not an easy task but we will continue to grind away at it. If you have an interest, please contact us. We are more than happy to meet or talk with anyone who has similar goals or has access to the public.
