Nomenclature Change
The American Association for the Study of Liver Disease recently announced a change in nomenclature regarding the terms nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Those terms were replaced by (for NAFLD) Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Liver Disease (MASLD) and Metabolic Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH). There is no clear implementation plan for the new terms. Our principal concern with the change (ignoring the cost to us) is that it will be difficult to explain the new terms to those who may have liver disease and not know it. We are making no changes in our website or our materials for the time being. We will be developing a strategy regarding the changes in the coming months.
